Eligibility Requirements for The Sons of The American Legion

All applicants for membership in the Sons of The American Legion must meet the following requirements established by The American Legion to be eligible for membership.

Male Decendant: Definition

Applicant must be a male descendant, adopted son or stepson of a member of The American Legion.

A male descendant of a veteran is defined as one of the following:

  • Son
  • Grandson
  • Great-grandson (and so on)
  • Stepson
  • Adopted Son
Sponsoring Veteran Qualifications

Applicant must be a male descendant of a veteran who died in service during World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, and the Persian Gulf War, or who died subsequent to their Honorable Discharge from such service.

Qualifiying Service Dates For Membership

World War I April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918
World War II December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946
Korean War June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955
Vietnam War February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975
Grenada and Lebanon August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984
Panama December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990
Persian Gulf August 2, 1990 closing date to be determined
